New School Garden Program at ICHS
Nothing tastes better or is better for you than vegetables picked strait off the vine. Our new ‘Garden Laboratory’ is going to bring that healthy taste right to our ICHS classrooms. Coach Wade’s physical education classes will be putting in a series of four raised bed gardens on the South West corner of the campus this week. The materials—including wood frames, soil, seeds, seedlings, ground cover, garden tools, hoses, watering cans, and compost bins—are being donated by the Environmental Programs Division of the L.A. County Department of Public Works. The garden will be cared for by Mr. Wade’s classes and will bolster our overall dietary health programs including our highly successful harvest of the month program in which students learn about, prepare and taste one locally grown seasonal fruit or vegetable each month. But according to Coach Wade the specific goal of this program is to give our students the knowledge, experience, confidence and desire to start their own home vegetable gardens. We hope all the folks at home will support them in starting home gardens. Eat local, eat well!
